Personality:
Kaede is laid-back, grumpy, and is used to getting spoiled. His opinion on someone usually doesn't change. If you fail to impress him at first meeting he probably won't talk to you ever again, as he doesn't bother with people not worth his time. He always speaks formally and politely. He is mischievous, a man of few words, very organized for everything, and is quite optimistic.
He is always worrying and thinking, never about himself, but he doesn't understand other peoples logic and is a bad listener. Although he might seem very serious, he's somewhat playful. He likes little children, cute animals, and music.

Reason of death:
Kaede was once a son from a very high, wealthy family in a certain ancient basara period in Japan. Being the first son, he was very favored with the emperor, and is treated very well by everybody.
Out of his relaxing and easy life he always felt that there was something missing, and so everyday he would cause some trouble, but his favorite thing to do is to go to the nearby bamboo forest to play. As he grew up, he was still rebellious and decided to skip school, but he loved to read books and write on the bamboo trees.
Soon the country was at war, many people's homes have been destroyed, and so did Kaede's. Kaede quickly became the emperors general, but he did not know how to lead an army nor how to fight. With no place to go, he ran back to the bamboo forest alone, also leaving his family behind.
He was shot by an arrow afterward when an enemy army was passing by, planning to cut down the bamboo forest, but in the end he remembered by people for being the general of a great country. He was struck with guilt since he did not do anything until the end, what was left was the bamboo forest which he protected.

Reason for being a tree spirit:
He wanted to start a new life, an unnoticed and normal life.
